Today felt like the right day to finish this and let it loose. The kind of day where the air makes decisions for you and your joints agree without discussion. When the cold shows up early, stays late, and reminds you that it has opinions, it seems only fair to put a few of my own into writing.
Cold and I have history. I grew up with it in Maine, where it was wet, heavy, and personal. The kind of cold that crawled into your boots, stayed for dinner, and refused to leave. Humidity made sure of that. You could shovel all morning and still feel damp and unfinished by noon. Back then, I had joints that believed in the future.
Now I live in Colorado, where the cold is dry, sharp, and judgmental. It doesn't linger; it points. The sun can be shining, the sky postcard-blue, and my knees still file a formal complaint. This cold doesn't soak in; it itemizes.
At nearly sixty, my body remembers both climates and hates them equally. Maine cold was a slow siege. Colorado cold is a surprise inspection. Either way, the joints speak up first, usually before I've had coffee and always without being asked.
There was a time when the weather was just the weather. Now it's a negotiation. Layers are strategy. Movement requires planning. Comfort has become a limited resource, like patience or daylight. I no longer "brave" the cold - I manage it.
I've lived long enough to know this: cold doesn't care where you're from, but it absolutely remembers how old you are.
